Cindy Huie, a dental hygienist who has lived in Kannapolis all of her life, said her parents stressed getting an education when she was younger because the mill might not always be there. Now she sees the emergence of the North Carolina Research Campus as a ray of hope for the former mill town. "I see new blood coming in here as a great stimulant for our community and our kids," she said. "Our children in middle school and high school now are realizing that there is not a job waiting for them at graduation, they are going to have to use their brains."
